A giant baby puppet is freaking out an entire town
Residents have described a giant baby puppet sitting in their town square as ‘terrifying’.
The 8.5m high figure, called Lilly, is part of a project in Rochdale, Greater Manchester to encourage children to talk about climate change, said the local council.
School pupils have visited the baby to tell her their thoughts on the future of the environment and how they plan to help protect it.
These ideas have been recorded and will be broadcast from the baby when it is relocated for an event in Hollingworth Lake Nature park next month.
Rochdale Borough Council said the response from children has been very positive, but it seems the adults of Rochdale are less enamoured.
After the council announced the Lilly’s arrival on social media, people wrote back saying the puppet was ‘creepy’, ‘horrifying’ and ‘freaky’.
Referencing the American horror film series, one poster wrote: ‘Chucky goes north’, while another said the puppet would have given them ‘nightmares for months seeing this as a kid’.
In response to the latter, the council replied: ‘Lucky the baby is a puppet or she would be upset by that comment This is an event for young children and they love her, the response has been fantastic.’
One person told BBC Radio Manchester it reminded them of the 1990 comedy film Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
The council posted about the puppet on Tuesday evening, writing: ‘Rochdale welcomed a special guest today, a baby girl who made a surprise visit to Rochdale Town Hall!
‘Lilly, the 8.5 metre baby will be part of the Wild Wanders event next month.
‘After waking up to meet local children, they sang to her and she was soon back asleep.
‘She’s invited hundreds of local schoolchildren to come and meet her this week, to find out what they think about the future of our environment.’
The Metro has contacted Rochdale Borough Council for comment.
