New Whitney Houston Live Album to Mark 30 Years Since South Africa Visit

An album containing Whitney Houston‘s first live performances in South Africa will mark three decades since the late singer’s visit there. The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban) will come out on Nov. 8, 30 years to the day since she performed at that city’s Kings Park Stadium. The performance featured many of her greatest hits, including a 10-plus–minute “I Will Always Love You,” “Saving All My Love for You,” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Houston also performed in Johannesburg and Cape Town on her visit celebrating the end of apartheid and President Nelson Mandela’s election win.

Houston’s estate is teasing the release with video of her emotional rendition of “I Have Nothing” at the concert. The full performance, with remastered audio and 4K resolution, will be available to view in select cinemas later this month. Full details are on a special website.

The album will be available digitally as well as on CD and vinyl. Each release will have a slightly different track list; the CD and digital version will include the previously unreleased studio recording, “Love Is.” Details about the various releases are also on a preorder website.

“When Sony sent me the remastered version of the music, I was floored by the quality of the sound and purity of her voice,” Pat Houston, the executor Whitney’s estate, said in a statement. “This album will remind, not just her core fans, but music lovers worldwide of Whitney’s virtuosity as a recording artist. I’m sure her fans will love and appreciate the live iteration of her hit classics. The fans have been waiting on this project for more than a decade and they certainly have expressed and made their sentiments known.”

Clive Davis, who signed Houston to his label Arista as a teenager, was similarly effusive. “If you want to experience the greatest female contemporary voice of all time, you must see Whitney Houston’s South Africa Durban concert film and own the album,” he said. “There will never be another Whitney Houston.”
