Mary J. Blige-Produced ‘Family Affair’ Film and Gloria Gaynor, Lisa Lisa Biopics to Premiere on Lifetime

Some of music’s greatest artists will tell their stories in new Lifetime films, Rolling Stone can reveal. On Friday, Lifetime announced that it will release Mary J. Blige, Lisa Lisa, and Gloria Gaynor films for their Voices of a Lifetime series.

The series of film releases will kick off with Mary J. Blige’s Family Affair on Jan. 25. It’s Blige’s third film based on her 2001 track “Family Affair,” following previously released Real Love and Strength of a Woman. Family Affair stars Ajiona Alexus and Da’Vinchi, who reprise their roles from the first two films.

“Their relationship reaches a boiling point when Ben secretly helps his brother, and Kendra returns to the city and an old friend comes back into her life,” reads a logline for Family Affair, which premieres on Lifetime on Jan 25. “The family must come together to help Kendra and Ben save their relationship and stay true to their real love.”

Blige is one of the movie’s executive producers. Troy Scott directed the film, and Rachel Ingram wrote the script.

The following weekend, on Feb. 1, Lifetime will premiere an authorized biopic on the life of Lisa Lisa, played by Jearnest Corchado. It’ll capture the star, born Lisa Velez, as she paves the way for the young Latina stars that have come after her. The film, titled Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story, will follow the Puerto Rican singer’s rise to become a historic Latina star in music.

Can You Feel the Beat is produced by Swirl Films, with Tailiah Breon directing the movie, with Rebecca Murga serving as the screenwriter. Velez is one of the film’s executive producers.

Voices of a Lifetime will conclude with I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story, whose production is led by Robin Roberts’ Rock’n Robin Productions. Joaquina Kalukango will play Gaynor, and Lance Gross will play Gaynor’s husband, Linwood Simon. Gaynor is also an executive producer of the biopic which will feature Gaynor’s best tracks, including the making of her iconic song “I Will Survive.”

“The biopic will also delve into the deeply personal challenges Gaynor faced, including overcoming her long and tumultuous marriage to her husband and manager,” reads the logline for the upcoming biopic.

Following the biopic, Lifetime will also air the documentary Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film follows Gaynor’s life and the “unexpectedly difficult journey to write and record a global album” and the making of her iconic track with the help of “the power of faith.”
