Lizzo and SZA Nearly Started a Rock Band Called ‘Pussy Lasers’ With Another Artist

Lizzo and SZA once considered starting a rock band together — and “F2F” from SOS was born around the time of that genius idea. During a Twitch stream Friday, Lizzo revealed that she and SZA almost started a band called Pussy Lasers alongside another, unnamed female artist.

“We just always been friends, and it’s a sacred space for me in this industry. We [had] this little period of time where we were just linking up in the studio,” Lizzo said on the stream. “One particular night, mind you, we was gonna start a rock band, called Pussy Lasers. Oh my gosh, she not gonna get mad if I say this.”

“We were going to start a rock band called Pussy Lasers with an incredible other artist who I don’t know if she even wants to be mentioned, so I’m not going to mention her,” she added, before telling a story about SZA’s “F2F.” Although it wasn’t going to necessarily become a Pussy Lasers song, Lizzo explained that they knew it “could be,” thanks to its Nineties, rocky energy.

“I was like, this shit is hard, though… I was like, ‘Man, pull that Pussy Lasers shit up,’ and let me tell you something: I sat and watched this girl freestyle the whole fucking song,” Lizzo said. “She ate that shit… At the end of it… I was like, ‘That’s the song.’”

Lizzo shared that she recorded a “mumble verse” for the song, and although it didn’t make it on the SOS version, some of her vocals still made the song. “I harmonized with her and that’s me. That’s big me,” she said. “I thought about that song all the time.”

Lizzo told the story to celebrate SZA’s songwriting skills, praising how she “writes the craziest, most insane shit that you’re thinking and feeling, but she just finds a way to say it, and she sees it so beautifully out the gate, out her mouth.”

Back in 2022, producer/songwriter Rob Bisel shared with Rolling Stone that Lizzo’s vocals were on the song, which was originally called “Charlatan.” “They were putting some energy into it,” producer Carter Lang told Rolling Stone. “There’s definitely a handful [of tracks with Lizzo],” added Bisel. “I don’t want to incriminate myself here, but there’s some stuff floating around for sure.”

SZA also told Rolling Stone during the interview that she and Lizzo “have so much fun together.”

“She’s another person who has hella [wide] music tastes and doesn’t fit in anybody’s box of anything. She makes it seem like she doesn’t even care, like she just does whatever she wants,” SZA said at the time. “And I just love being with her, just as a friend and hanging out. So whenever she comes to a studio, I just feel like, ‘Let’s drop into some bullshit.’”

Earlier in Friday’s stream, Lizzo shared a trailer for a “new era” of music, starting on Feb. 28. “I want to introduce to you guys, the newest piece of content from the new era. I’ve been working on new music for the last two years,” Lizzo said Friday. “I took my time and I did it right… I want to give it to you to interpret and make your own. It encapsulates the heart of all the music I’ve been writing, and I truly am coming to gag.”
