Jane’s Addiction Members Making Music Together Without Perry Farrell
Three months after a Jane’s Addiction reunion tour abruptly ended following an onstage fight, the band appears to be back in the studio together without singer Perry Farrell.
Eric Avery shared video from a recent recording session where he was adding bass to Stephen Perkins’ drumming. “Writing some more new lines to some of Stephens drumming. Look forward to getting some Mr [Dave] Navarro on them. 2025!,” Avery wrote in the caption; Perkins also shared Avery’s video on his Instagram (via Stereogum).
This isn’t the first time the trio attempted to make music together sans Farrell following a Jane’s breakup: After the group’s first split in 1991, Navarro and Avery linked up for a project that would later be called Deconstruction, though Perkins’ participation was reportedly protested by Jane’s Addiction record label, fearing confusion with another band the drummer was in, Farrell’s Porno for Pyros.
Deconstruction released one self-titled album in 1994 before Navarro moved on to Red Hot Chili Peppers. Perhaps not-so-coincidentally, Navarro has spent the past week on Instagram reminiscing about the lone Deconstruction LP, which was recently re-released on streaming services.
“I think that some of the magic between Eric and I musically is most definitely evident on this project,” Navarro wrote. “I’d say it’s more cinematic and soundscapey than traditional song oriented. Perhaps that’s why it was a tough listen for some. Having revisited it after all these years I believe this record contains some of my favorite recorded playing and interplay between E’s bass and my guitar.”
It’s unclear whether Navarro, Perkins and Avery working together again signifies the start of Deconstruction 2.0 or another project entirely; at the time of Jane’s Addiction’s sudden split in September, the band had been working on new music, including an unfortunately timed new single.
Jane’s Addiction’s already-tumultuous “Core Four” reunion tour was canceled after Farrell attacked Navarro during the band’s concert in Boston, with the band citing a “continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell.”
They continued, “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”
Soon after the sudden breakup, Farrell’s wife said the singer “already has appointments with a otolaryngologist and a neurologist,” and that he would take time “to reflect and to heal” after the confrontation.
