TikTok Star Beandri Booysen Dead at 19 From Rare Aging Disease
Social media personality Beandri Booysen has died at age 19.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Beandri Booysen, one of South Africa’s most beloved and inspiring young women,” Booysen’s mother, Bea, shared via Facebook on Wednesday, December 18. “Beandri was not only known for her vibrant personality and infectious laugh but also as the last surviving individual in South Africa living with Progeria — a rare genetic condition that causes children to age prematurely.”
The statement further noted that Booysen “radiated hope and joy” despite facing health challenges.
“She became a symbol of awareness for Progeria and other special needs, using her unique spirit to inspire thousands of people worldwide,” the obituary continued. “The Booysen family kindly requests privacy during this profoundly difficult time as they mourn the loss of their beloved Beandri. Further details regarding the memorial service will be shared in due course.”
Booysen’s mother previously asked for prayers when her daughter suffered a health scare.
“Please pray. Beandri’s heart stopped,” Bea wrote earlier on Wednesday. “They are trying to get her heart to beat again. Please pray.”
Booysen turned 19 weeks before her death.
“Happy 19th Birthday to our Dearest Angel daughter, Beandri Booysen,” Bea wrote via Facebook on November 20. “We are so proud of the young lady you became and for being such an inspiration to so many people. We love you to the moon and back.”
Booysen was born with progeria, which is also known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is a rare, progressive genetic disorder that causes children to age rapidly.
The average life expectancy for a child with progeria is approximately 15 years with causes of death often pointing to heart problems or strokes. In Booysen’s case, a cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
While there is not presently a cure for progeria, Booysen was known for sharing uplifting social media videos about her condition.
“You can do anything you dream of,” Booysen’s TikTok bio read.
Booysen recently underwent cardiothoracic surgery in October, where doctors needed to insert grafts into her heart.
“Beandri is breathing on her own (without oxygen) since this morning and doing very well. She walked a bit further than yesterday,” Bea on October 15. “Dr said her right lung is clear and there is only a little bit of fluids around the left lung. If all goes well, she will be transferred to a normal ward tomorrow. She is so strong and we are so proud.”
Booysen was discharged from the hospital two days later.
