Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackman’s Relationship Timeline

Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackman’s relationship was platonic before it blossomed into a romance.

While Foster and Jackman crossed paths as fellow members of the Broadway community, their camaraderie grew stronger when they were both cast in the 2022 revival of The Music Man. While sharing the stage for more than a year, Foster and Jackman grew close.

“He has an impeccable reputation of being the hardest working man, incredibly kind, and generous—and all of that is true. He disarms everyone, and he doesn’t make anything about him,” Foster gushed of her costar in a June 2022 interview with Vogue. “And he’s now become one of my best friends, which was a surprise, because you usually go into these things thinking, ‘Well, I hope we get along.’ But we just spent Memorial Day with our families. It’s really fun to meet new friends after 40.”

Both Jackman and Foster were in relationships with other people when they first met. The Deadpool and Wolverine actor was married to long-time love Deborra-Lee Furness, while Foster was married to Ted Griffin. In September 2023, Jackman and Furness announced they had separated after nearly three decades of marriage. The following year, Foster filed for divorce from Griffin.

In November 2024, Us Weekly reported that Jackman called it quits with Furness because of the actor’s “relationship” with Foster.

“A lot of people on Broadway knew, and we kept it quiet because both of them are so nice and great people,” a source exclusively told Us at the time. “Everyone respected their privacy. But there was an affair and overlap.”

Two months later, Jackman and Foster confirmed their romance while enjoying a date night out in Los Angeles.

While hosting the 68th Annual Tony Awards, Jackman and Foster shared a dance in the audience.

November 2021

Two years after their casting, rehearsals for The Music Man were underway. Both Foster and Jackman shared behind-the-scenes moments of the pair preparing to share the stage.

“We’re coming your way Broadway,” Jackman wrote via Instagram alongside a clip of the cast practicing a number. “And here’s a sneak at what we’re packing.”

The twosome took the stage together for the first time when The Music Man entered previews.

February 2022

Foster and Jackman walked the red carpet together for opening night.

March 2022

Jackman surprised Foster on stage by getting the audience to sing Happy Birthday to his costar during their curtain call.

“Hugh Jackman is an evil, horrible, WONDERFUL human,” the actress captioned the Instagram Reel showing off the sweet gesture. “He had the entire audience sing to me last night.”

June 2022

The duo attended the 75th Tony Awards where they performed a number from The Music Man together. The show was up for Best Revival, while both Jackman and Foster were nominated for Best Actor and Actress. The production took home zero awards.

January 2023

Broadway’s The Music Man came to an end after being on stage for more than a year.

September 2023

Jackman and Furness, who share two adopted children, announced that they had split after 27 years of marriage.

“We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth,” the former couple said in a joint statement to People at the time. “Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”

October 2024

Nearly one year after Jackman announced his separation, Us confirmed that Foster filed for divorce from Griffin days before what would have been their 10th wedding anniversary. The exes share daughter Emily, whom they adopted in April 2017.

November 2024

One month after news broke of Foster’s split from Griffin, Us reported that Foster and Jackman were dating. A source told Us that the twosome were “happier than ever.”

January 2025

Jackman was spotted at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles supporting Foster during the final week of her West Coast performances of Once Upon a Mattress. A few days after the show, the couple confirmed their romance when they were photographed holding hands while out and about in Los Angeles.
