Are V-Neck Tees Currently In Style?

Even guys who are not that into fashion think about the trends sometimes. It’s normal because we all want to look nice and in step with the times.

And since t-shirts make up a significant part of many men’s outfits, we decided to take a closer look at one of the most popular styles – V-necks.

Is this controversial piece of wardrobe currently in style, and should most guys get at least a few for the summer?

What’s a V-neck tee?

Here’s a brief history of v neck t shirts for men if you’ve been living under a rock or need a quick memory refresher.

For many years a t-shirt meant a classic crewneck worn as an undershirt to protect the clothing from bodily grime. Only around 60 years ago, guys decided it was time to wear it as outerwear and started a new massive trend lasting till this day.

Once the crewneck became ubiquitous, designers decided to introduce a similar garment only with a different neckline. The collarless V shape neckline made the tee perfect to wear under most clothing without the collar peaking, and its unique style was beloved by fashion-forward guys everywhere.

Not all men loved V-necks, and many refused to try them, foreshadowing the controversy ahead.

The dark days

One of the main reasons many guys worry about looking bad in a V-neck and, therefore, often avoid this style altogether is that it’s experienced dark days in the late 90s and early 2000s.

For some unknown reason, the only V-neck you could get at the time had a plunging neckline that revealed fake tans and chest hair and looked super tacky.

The reality show “Jersey Shore” and its bros didn’t help the reputation, so even when clothing designers tried to fix the situation by releasing normal-looking V-necks, the damage was done.

Pros of a V-neck

We think that one of the best ways to redeem a V-neck is to focus not on its past faults but on its current pros.

First of all, a V-neck tee is naturally a little bit more put-together and fashion-forward than your classic crewneck. You can pair it with nice chinos, and you look all dressed up!

Another advantage is that the neckline creates a lengthening effect on your torso, creates an optical illusion of an angular shape and at the same time can highlight your toned body or slim you a little if you have a few extra lbs (nothing wrong with that!).

Avoid getting a V-neck with a low neckline (stick to the ones with up to 4 inches), logos or graphics; get the right size, and you’re golden!
