Week 6 NFL Draft intel: Former Pro Bowler loves this QB

Each week, Yardbarker is monitoring the 2025 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 24-26 in Green Bay.

From a surging quarterback to an overlooked wide receiver, here are five players we are tracking.

Two-time Pro Bowler loves Penn State QB Drew Allar

Former Penn State QB Kerry Collins — who played 17 seasons in the NFL — recently praised Allar (6-foot-5, 238 pounds).

“He’s physically imposing,” Collins told ESPN’s Jake Trotter. “He’s got an NFL body and skillset. There are other [Penn State QBs] who had tremendous success. But I wouldn’t say they had translated into what is needed in the NFL. Drew has that, a hundred percent.”

Through five starts, Allar has 1,101 yards, nine TDs and one pick and has posted the FBS’ fifth-best QBR (88.8).

Penn State hasn’t had a QB drafted in the first round since the Carolina Panthers took Collins with the fifth pick in 1995. Perhaps Allar will snap the streak. An NFL executive told Trotter Allar’s arrow is “pointing up.”

Don’t forget about Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka

Although sensational freshman WR Jeremiah Smith leads the Buckeyes in receiving yards (453 in five games), don’t overlook Egbuka. In four seasons with Ohio State, he has the sixth-most receptions (154), 10th-most receiving yards (2290) and is tied for the 10th-most TD catches (19) in program history.

Buckeyes WR coach Brian Hartline recently told Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy that Egbuka (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) reminds him of Detroit Lions star Amon Ra. St-Brown (6-foot-1, 202 pounds).

In a 35-7, Week 6 win over Iowa, Egbuka had nine receptions for 71 yards and three TD catches. If he has an encore performance in Saturday’s road game against No. 3 Oregon (5-0), that would show why he’s a potential first-rounder.

CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso has the Pittsburgh Steelers selecting him with pick No. 21 in his latest mock draft.

Does LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier already look like an ‘NFL starter?’

Entering the season, it wasn’t clear whether Nussmeier was a viable replacement for 2023 Heisman winner Jayden Daniels, now with the Washington Commanders. However, he’s 4-1 in five starts and producing excellent numbers.

Nussmeier (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) is tied for the fifth-most TD passes (15) in the FBS and has the seventh-most passing yards (1,652). Of course, Nussmeier has only played one ranked opponent — then-No. 23 USC (3-2) — but he’s still impressing the experts.

“Garrett Nussmeier is a guy that I don’t think people we’re talking about coming into the year,” Nagy said on a Wednesday episode of the “Move The Sticks” podcast. “But if you watch Garrett Nussmeier’s tape right now, I mean, he looks like an NFL starter.”

Nussmeier has only made six starts in four seasons with the Tigers. While he’s generating buzz, he should consider returning to LSU next season to gain more experience.

Head coach has bold proclamation about Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders

Before its road matchup vs. Colorado on Saturday, Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman raved about Sanders, who’s 10th in the FBS in passing yards (1,630).

“I think Sanders will be the first quarterback picked off the board,” Klieman told the media Monday. “He should be.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel recently surveyed 20 NFL scouts and executives to determine the top QB in the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders received the most votes (nine), followed by Georgia’s Carson Beck (five) and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe (four).

In two seasons with Colorado, Sanders (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) still doesn’t have a win over a ranked opponent. Beating No. 18 Kansas State (4-1) could strengthen his QB1 case.

Texas A&M edge-rusher Nic Scourton is emerging as an early riser

On Thursday, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. rated Scourton (6-foot-4, 285 pounds) as his No. 6 prospect on his updated big board. He was previously ranked No. 14.

“[Scourton] uses his frame and strength to stop ball carriers in their tracks,” Kiper wrote. “Scourton is a power rusher off the edge, but he also shows impressive closing speed to the QB and is always hustling.”

Through six games, Scourton has 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Don’t be surprised if Scourton, Penn State’s Abdul Carter and Tennessee’s James Pearce Jr. keep vying for the top edge-rusher spot.
