Mom noticed her adult son looked ‘very sweaty’ – then found he had dying woman hidden in his RV
A Texas mother confronted her adult son over why he looked “very sweaty” outside his RV – only to find that he was apparently concealing a woman he hacked with a machete.
The woman – who was not named publicly – walked outside of her China Springs home on Saturday morning and saw her son, Richard Ranner Ozment, 36, standing outside noticeably perspiring, KWTX reported.
The woman became suspicious, and tried to walk around Ozment, the outlet said, citing the affidavit from the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman ended up having to shove her way past Ozment, at which point she noticed a human foot near an RV on the property.
When she walked behind the RV, the shocked mother came upon Michaela Brooker, 38, who had been severely wounded with a machete-like object.
“What have you done?” the mother asked Ozment, who replied that the victim “tried to stab [him].”
The panicked mother ran back into the house, and Ozment’s father called 911, KWTX reported.
China Spring firefighters were the first on the scene, where they saw a man running away from the home.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they cleared the property but could not find the suspect.
First responders treated Brooker for “extensive injuries, mainly, to her head,” according to the affidavit. She was airlifted to the hospital, where she died from her wounds.
Ozment was located 10 hours later hiding in a stock tank just a football field away from the crime scene.
He was arrested, and is now being held on murder charges with a $1 million bond.
“This is one of the most horrific, brutal and senseless attacks that we have seen in a long time,” Sheriff Parnell McNamara said of the killing.
Brooker’s killing was a “domestic disturbance,” the sheriff said, though he declined to elaborate on the victim’s relationship with the suspect.
Ozment’s extensive criminal history included a first arrest and conviction for aggravated sexual assault when he was just 16 years old.
Three years later, he was arrested on a felony terroristic threat charge.
When Ozment was 25, he was arrested for taking photographs outside China Spring Elementary School, and was charged with failing to register and a sex offender.
He also admitted to participating in burglaries and was sentenced to 40 years behind bars.
He only served 10 years before being released on parole.
“[The murder] never should have happened. This guy who we believe committed this horrible and brutal murder was sentenced to 40 years. He served approximately 10 years, was paroled out and then committed this horrible crime. He never should have gotten out, but he did,” Sheriff McNamara lamented.
Michaela Brooker leaves behind a young son, according to her obituary.
As of Thursday afternoon, a GoFundMe for her family had raised over $7,000 of its $10,000 goal.
