Minnesota great-grandmother wins lottery after stage 4 brain-cancer diagnosis: ‘Life is now going to be good’

A Minnesota great-grandmother won $100,000 on a lottery ticket — that she scratched off in the hospital after being diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.

Debbie Bury recently won big while waiting in the oncology unit at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park — just after doctors told her they had found three tumors on her brain, WCCO reported.

“[The doctor] said, ‘I just gotta let you know you have three cancerous tumors in your head. All I see is black, and all I see is death,’ ” Bury recalled.

One of the friends who rushed to visit her in the hospital in the wake of the news brought the Minnesota Vikings-themed scratch-off to help cheer her up, Bury said.

The great-grandmother has since undergone surgery for the aggressive cancer — and doctors are hopeful it could buy her another six years.

“It felt like life is now going to be good,” an optimistic Bury said. “It was meant to be.”

Bury, who is an avid blackjack player, said she only recently realized something was wrong with her health when she suddenly had trouble adding up numbers during a game.

“They weren’t coming together right,” she said.

“A lot of times, you have to put cards in order. They just weren’t – they didn’t want to play with me. They are like, ‘We are done with you. You don’t have it anymore.’ ”
