Gov. Josh Shapiro warns Musk may face scrutiny over ‘deeply concerning’ $1 million giveaways

Dem Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro suggested Sunday that Donald Trump-loving tech mogul Elon Musk could face legal scrutiny over his $1 million giveaways intended to get people to register to vote.

Musk, 53, has pledged to randomly dole out a $1 million check every day from Saturday until Nov. 5 to a registered voter in Pennsylvania or one of five other critical swing states if they sign his generic America PAC petition backing freedom of speech and the right to bear arms.

Musk — who has given away two million-dollar checks, both in Pennsylvania, so far — originally formed the PAC to support Trump in the presidential election.

“I think there are real questions with how [Musk] is spending money in this race. How the dark money is flowing, not just into Pennsylvania but apparently now into the pockets of Pennsylvanians,” Shapiro told NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”

“That is deeply concerning.”

Shapiro, 51, who previously served as Pennsylvania’s attorney general from 2017 to 2023, stopped short of calling the move illegal but posited that prosecutors may examine it.

“I think it’s something that law enforcement could take a look at. I’m not the attorney general anymore of Pennsylvania. I’m the governor, but it does raise some serious questions,” he replied when asked if it was legal.

The Pennsylvania governor was widely rumored to be one of the finalists in Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris’ veepstakes thanks to his oratory skills and the potential to help her lock down the critical state in her presidential run-off against GOPer Trump in November.

Ultimately, she opted for Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz because of her friendly rapport with him and after Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) reportedly badmouthed his home-state governor to her campaign.

Musk has become increasingly political in recent years and endorsed former President Trump over the summer in the wake of the July 13 Butler, Pa., assassination attempt against him.

The tech guru has particularly homed in on the Keystone State, where he lived for about three years for his studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Musk’s PAC was formed in July to help boost Trump and was intended to aid canvassing operations. The billionaire had given about $75 million to the cause.

Thus far, the two winners of his $1 million prize are John Dreher and Kristine Fishell. The billionaire previously vowed that his PAC will dish out $100 to registered swing-state voters who signed the petition.

During the 2024 election homestretch, Musk also has held multiple town halls in Pennsylvania and fielded questions from voters, warning about the stakes of the contest.

He reportedly held a call with Shapiro earlier this month to discuss the possibility of investing in Pennsylvania.

Given that he was born in South Africa, Musk is constitutionally ineligible from seeking the presidency himself. Still, he has discussed the possibility of helming a government efficiency operation under Trump if the ex-prez wins back the White House.

Last week, Musk separately took a victory lap after his SpaceX team managed to successfully catch a Starship booster with its Mechazilla tower’s chopstick-like arms.

That marked a significant step forward in SpaceX’s objective of developing a rapidly reusable Super Heavy lift rocket capable of traveling to destinations such as the moon and Mars.
