Family wants answers after teen worker driving go-kart fatally collides with forklift at SC amusement park
A teenage worker was killed Friday when the go-kart he was driving smashed into an industrial-size forklift inside a South Carolina amusement park – leaving the victim’s family begging for answers.
Kamel Seveion Sewell, 17, died of blunt force injury to the head when the go-kart and the forklift collided around 11:45 p.m. at Frankie’s Fun Park, according to the medical examiner’s office, WYFF reported.
The teenager’s death was ruled an accident, the coroner’s office said on Sunday.
“He always had a smile on his face,” a coworker said when remembering Sewell, according to the station.
“He was a very hospitable person. Very great and friendly to guests, great and friendly to us, his coworkers. It’s really sad that this situation happened when it could’ve very easily been avoided.”
More information, including what caused the fatal crash, was still under investigation.
Ryan James, a lawyer representing the Sewell family, said loved ones are “in considerable mourning.”
“In fact, I’d candidly say, gut wrenched,” he said in a statement to Fox Carolina.
“After my meeting with them this morning, it became clear they want answers. They deserve that much. As the day has progressed, my office has begun to undertake the process of fact-finding, with all eyes on causation, as well as the ‘who.’”
The forklift was operated by another park employee.
Sewell worked at the park for about a year before his tragic death.
“At this time, Frankie’s is providing information and assistance to both law enforcement and OSHA,” Jamie Waddell, the park’s general manager, said in a statement to Greenville News.
“When the circumstances and causes of the accident are determined, additional information will be related, as appropriate. It is with a heavy heart that we share this news. Please keep Seveion and his family in your thoughts.”
