Woman dies after being hit by truck full of animals at farmer’s market

The incident happened on Main Street in High Bentham, North Yorkshire

A 74-year-old woman has died after she was hit by a livestock truck at an auction market.

The incident happened on Main Street in High Bentham, North Yorkshire, at about 10.15am on Wednesday.

The woman died at the scene.

A 48-year-old man, driving a red Scania HGV, which was pulling a livestock trailer, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He is now under investigation after questoning.

The investigation into it is continuing and officers are supporting the woman’s family.

A local store owner told Metro he didn’t see the crash but saw the aftermath unfold.

‘There were lots of police and emergency service vehicles around the area just after the incident,’ he said.

‘Because it was also auction day, traffic was at a standstill so people could not drive through central Bentham.

‘The road was closed until about 6 but I still had customers coming into the shop.

‘It was only a small section of the road that was closed and drivers were diverted around.

‘It is a tragedy for the woman who was killed.’

The scene of the crash was closed for some time but has now reopened.

Police are asking for people who saw what happened to get in touch.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: ‘If you witnessed the incident or have relevant dashcam footage of the woman or the red Scania HGV with a livestock trailer prior to the collision, please get in touch without delay.

‘It is believed the woman, and the HGV, were heading west down Mount Pleasant before the collision occurred at the entrance to the auction mart.’
