Wetherspoons pulls key breakfast item from menu after shortage

Wetherspoons has pulled an essential breakfast item after a produce shortage.

The pub chain has been hit with free-range egg supply issues, meaning diners will have to go without – instead being offered an alternative item in place of eggs.

Notices have gone up outside a number of Wetherspoons’ branches telling customers of the shortage.

Signs outside pubs read: “Free-range egg supply shortages.

“Because of free-range egg shortages, we will be replacing eggs with a hash brown on the following dishes: Large traditional breakfast, traditional breakfast, small breakfast large vegetarian breakfast, vegetarian breakfast, small vegetarian breakfast freedom breakfast.

“If you would like an alternative item, please order at the bar – and we will assist you with this. Apologies for any inconvenience which this may cause.”

One person said on a social media page dedicated to the chain: “What a clucking liberty.”

A Twitter user said: “What is going on went to Spoons today and they have no eggs for breakfast.

“Sorry but have to go to Premier inn for my Breakfast.”

Customers in Somerset, Brighton, Leominster, Harrogate, Cornwall and Cardiff said on social media that they had to do without eggs on their breakfast as well.

Another said: “First a Guinness shortage and now no eggs. What’s happening to the world?”

Wetherspoons said: “We source some of our free-range eggs from suppliers and farms based in Northern Ireland.

“The recent outbreak of Avian flu has put pressure on egg availability with measures put in place by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to restrict the spread.

“We are working with all of our egg suppliers to reduce disruption in pubs.”

Wetherspoons customers were also left furious after their favourite dish was axed from 40 of the pub’s branches across the country.

The classic 8oz sirloin steak – complete with a soft drink – was available for just £13.

For an extra £1.74 customers could enjoy an alcoholic drink.

Pub bosses confirmed the dish has been removed from some menus, but have not yet revealed why.

They did however confirm it is still available in 760 of the chain’s pubs across the United Kingdom.
