Two boys, 16 and 17, killed after car ‘failed to stop’ before crashing into tree

Two teenagers have died after the car they were in crashed into a tree in Birmingham.

The boys, aged 16 and 17, were travelling in a vehicle with three other teens at the time of the collision in Grove Lane, Handsworth, just after 2am on Thursday.

Police said the car ‘failed to stop’ for officers before the smash.

The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, with cops saying ‘nothing could be done to save him’.

The 16-year-old died later in hospital.

Their three pals were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: ‘A second teenager has sadly died following a collision in Handsworth in the early hours of this morning.

‘The 16-year-old boy was in a car which failed to stop for police before hitting a tree in Grove Lane just after 2am.

‘A 17-year-old boy was also pronounced dead at the scene after sadly, nothing could be done to save him.

‘Three other teenagers who were also in the car have been taken to hospital.

‘We remain at the scene as investigations continue.’

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation into the incident.
