Tragedy as boy, 6, dies in his sleep after school sent him home with ‘a bump’
The father of a boy who died in his sleep after banging his head at school has claimed he was told it was “just a bump”.
Muhammad Yaseen Uddin, six, was found dead in bed last Wednesday morning after he was sent home from Marlborough Primary School in Small Heath, Birmingham. Dad, Simriel Uddin, paid tribute to his “beautiful, kind-hearted little boy”, saying Muhammad had hit his head at school.
Mr Uddin said the primary told his wife Muhammad “bumped his head” and replied it was “nothing serious, it’s just a bump” after she asked if it was serious.
The youngster was collected from school and taken home where he watched TV, shared some of his sister’s birthday cake then went to bed, according to MailOnline.
Next morning, Mr Uddin answered a frantic call from his wife while he was at work, telling him Muhammad, who was also known as Yaseen, wouldn’t wake up.
Mr Uddin rushed home to find police and paramedics outside his home, who told him Yaseen had been take to hospital.
He said he was taken to see his son, but realised Yaseen was “gone”. Mr Uddin said he felt let down by the school, which he said needed medically trained staff.
The grieving father said the school needed to be “more alert”, with first aiders on site to spot any signs.
Questions surrounding the school’s response to Yaseen hitting his head come after another boy died at Leigh Primary, another school which is part of Leigh Trust.
Yasir Hussain died aged 10 in November 2020 after hitting his head at Leigh Primary, although staff called an ambulance on this occasion.
An inquest found while Yasir should have been sent to hospital sooner, doing so might not have stopped him from dying.
Express.co.uk has approached Marlborough Primary School for comment.
Razia Ali, executive headteacher, told the Independent the school community has been devastated by the tragic passing of one of its wonderful and much-loved pupils.
Mrs Ali said: “Yaseen was an incredibly helpful, kind and caring pupil who brought a smile to the face of everyone who came across him.
“I know I speak for everyone when I say he will be deeply missed. All our thoughts and prayers are with Yaseen’s family and friends.
“Our dedicated pastoral team is providing full support to all our pupils and colleagues as we come to terms with this very sad loss.”
She added that the school will consider a suitable way to commemorate Yaseen at an appropriate time and after discussion with his family.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Yaseen’s family to build a mosque in his memory.
