Tourists comparing UK seaside town to North Korea told ‘stop – it’s boring’
People comparing a famous UK seaside town to places like Syria and North Korea have been told to pack it in. It is “getting boring now”, a regional reporter has said.
Joe Griffin, a Lincolnshire Live journalist wrote: “Skegness has faced an abundance of criticism over the years and this negativity has now reached absurd new heights. It’s about time it all stopped.”
He added that he knows it’s “not everyone’s cup of tea”, but to compare it with a country that is considered to have the “worst human rights record in the world” is “ludicrous”.
Skegness is located on the Lincolnshire coast of the North Sea. It is 43 miles east of Lincoln and 22 miles north-east of Boston.
At the 2021 Census, a population of 21,128 was recorded. This makes it the largest settlement in East Lindsey.
It is of course famous as a holiday destination. However, cheaper flights abroad ensured that some people started looking elsewhere for places to take a break.
As with many similar places across the UK, it has been to some extent shunned for holidays abroad.
However, Joe adds that, for millions of holidaymakers, Skegness “continues to be a go-to getaway every year”.
He added: “It is a haven for families looking for a simple and joyful holiday by the beach with plenty to keep the kids entertained. And, most importantly, it doesn’t break the bank.
“Many sadly can’t afford to jet off to five star resorts each year, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to relax and have fun.
“The vast golden beach, traditional amusements and bustling promenade – not to mention an array of delicious fish and chip shops – are a perfect recipe for a great British summer holiday.
“Skegness is not trying to be something it’s not. And that’s what makes it so great. You can pop along for the day with just £10 in your pocket and come away with a smile on your face (and some change). Something I experienced first hand.”
Joe also wrote: “I just recently watched a YouTube video of a young travelling couple who decided to visit Skegness to see if it was really as bad as people make out. As I expected, they came away extremely impressed and were blow away by how friendly everyone was that they came across.
The reporter concluded: “This iconic British seaside town deserves better. Of course, it’s not perfect, but the constant jibes and disrespect are not needed and quite frankly boring. So to those who continually bash Skegness, get off your high horse and come see what the area has to offer. You never know, you might crack a smile.”
