The new £1bn dual carriageway that will end traffic chaos between two UK cities

An incredible new £1 billion dual carriageway is being built in an attempt to end traffic chaos between two cities.

The A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet is undergoing huge renovations with the aim of improving journeys between Milton Keynes and Cambridge.

National Highways has said that it will bring communities together and support long term growth in the region when it opens in 2027.

Currently, the road is a stretch of single carriageway between St Neots and Caxton Gibbet between the M1 and M11, with over 25,000 vehicles using it every day.

With considerable local housing additions and job growth expected, National Highways has said this number is likely to grow to 32,900 vehicles by 2040.

People that use the A428 regularly experience congestion and delays, especially in rush hour. The situation is made worse by the lack of alternative routes.

The improvements is set to cut commutes by more than a third during peak times, saving up to ten minutes each way – this is as much as 1.5 hours over a five-day working week.

The new dual carriageway will increase capacity, reliability and safety on the road network, encouraging investors and visitors to the area and will make jobs in Milton Keynes and Cambridge more accessible.

National Highways has also said the new dual carriageway will cut congestion on the existing road, removing the temptation for drivers to use local roads to avoid delays – leading to up to 4,000 less cars on local roads.

Work being done includes a new three-tier junction at Black Cat roundabout, new junctions at Caxton Gibbet and Cambridge Road, and a new Roxton Road link to connect Wyboston and Chawston.

There will also be new bridges at Roxton Road, Barford Road, Toseland Road, River Great Ouse and East Coast Main Line railway.
