The beautiful hidden gem UK beach that’s home to near-extinct animal

As the Autumn sun gives way to chillier climes, it’s tempting to cosy up and stay indoors.

Although summer is when the UK’s beaches are usually crammed with those looking make the most of white sands and glittering sea, winter is also a great time to explore some of the best stretches of coastline that Britain has to offer.

One great example is Formby Beach which is often picked out for praise as being a bit of a hidden gem. Located just 15 miles from Liverpool, the beach is framed by desert-like sand dunes and coastal pinewoods.

And as Formby beach is a National Trust beach, it also offers rare wildlife, a rich history and stunning views.

Although the beach is the main attraction it’s also worth visiting the beautiful surrounding woodlands which are home to some super rare red squirrels, which are almost extinct in the UK. The red squirrel is officially classed as endangered in England and Wales and near threatened in Scotland.

The beach is perfect for dog walks, long strolls and gusty fresh air. The National Trust website explains more about the beach.

It says: “Discover some of North West Europe’s most important sand dune habitats, where many rare species including natterjack toads thrive.

“Rich in history, visitors can catch glimpses of the past from spotting pre-historic footprints and shipwrecks to strolling through what was once acres of asparagus fields.

“Formby’s sweeping pinewoods are also home to the iconic red squirrel.”

Some of the key draws of the stretch of coastline are that there is parking within about 50 metres of main entrance, it’s pet friendly and there is also an accessible toilet.

Located just a few miles north of Liverpool and south of Southport, Formby Village is also a place that’s quickly becoming a charming attraction. Southport tourism website Visitsouthport.com explains more.

It said: “A hot-spot for celebrities, whether that be premier league footballers, athletes, actors, musicians or influencers, Formby is considered one of the most aspirational places to live in the UK. For daytrippers, Formby is an amazing place to visit with so many things to do and see.

“If you are looking to experience an amazing vibrant village with beautiful nature and historic attractions, whether that be by yourself or with your family, Formby will delight in so many ways.”

But the beach is the main must-visit, with many taking to travel review website Tripadvisor to share their experiences.

One said: “Spectacular sand dunes and wide sandy beach surrounded by woodland.”

Another said: “Stunning beach, great dunes. Even toilets in the car park. Well worth a visit. Tide goes way out. Life guard on the beach. Loved it.”
