Seven-month-old baby boy dies after car veers off road and crashes into tree
A seven-month old baby boy has been killed as a car plowed into a tree in Lincolnshire amid ‘icy conditions’.
The incident happened at around 10.50pm last night when a yellow Honda Jazz skirted off the road before hitting the tree and then coming back to rest on the carriageway.
Police rushed to the scene a few hundred metres from Spittlegate Junction on the A1 Grantham bypass where three adults and the child were injured.
The baby had sustained serious injuries, and was taken to hospital, but he sadly died just after 5am this morning.
A woman also travelling in the same car suffered serious wounds and isnow fighting for her life.
Meanwhile, the two other people in the Honda were not seriously injured.
Police confirmed that the icy conditions on the road could be the cause of the crash as an amber weather warning for snow and ice was issued for Lincolnshire.
The Met Office had warned that snow and freezing rain are likely to lead to disruption across the region and possibly up to 7cm of snow.
A police statement said: ‘We are investigating the cause of the collision, and while we are keeping an open mind, we are considering whether this was linked to icy conditions on the carriageway in that area.
‘We are asking for help from anyone who may have been driving in that area over the past few days to get in touch with information or dashcam they may have which show conditions over the past few days.’
The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked overnight.
The southbound carriageway remains closed by Highways.
