Locals in rural Wales are fuming after a £4,000 metal Christmas tree was installed in their country market town.

The ‘modern festive centrepiece’ has been leased by the council for one month in Cardigan, West Wales, but residents are demanding a real tree be installed instead.

The tree has a fully illuminated frame, meant to provide a ‘striking’ sight when it lights up.

But during the day, its appearance is less than ideal – a metal frame with bin bags hiding the electrical plugs.

Some have even branded it as looking like a ‘builder’s yard’ and ‘absolute eyesore’.

Local Michelle Hughes said: ‘It’s basically scaffolding poles with lights draped over it.’

Other suggested that the metal tree wasn’t worth £4,000, with one user saying: ‘For that? That’s like £100 off ebay.’

One woman raised concerns over the cost of the rental, writing: ‘£4k cost of tree or to lease it. OK it’s Christmas. The streets are all lit with lights from dusk to dawn. While our elderly are freezing in their homes.’

Anthony Probert pointed out the tree could pose a ‘health and safety risk’ due to its exposed wires and ‘climbable frame’.

Some went as far as saying they would donate a real fir tree: ‘As Festive Follies go, this is flippin’ far away the pinnacle. I will happily donate a Christmas tree to Cardigan to soften the blow of this gordy galvanised garbuncle.’

The council has defended the decision to put the tree up, citing its alignment with efforts to modernise the town’s decor.

Mal Evans said: ‘Shops and businesses have worked hard to bring a fabulous Christmas display to the town. This tree is part of that vision.’

Even with the outcry, locals have found the bright side of the situation.

‘The whole town looks lovely at night with the lights and lanterns,’ Wendy Yates said.

Another commenter said: ‘I like it. It’s probably not quite as pretty in the daylight… but it’s OK in the dark.’
