Poundland drops price of nearly 1,000 products to £1 or less

Poundlandappears to have bowed to public pressure increased the number of products priced at £1 or less to 2,400.

The discount store had already reduced the prices of basics including milk, bread, sugar and eggs before Christmas.

The discounter has a core range of 5,000 products, 1,500 of which have been already reduced in its ‘January sale’; these lower prices can be found on everything from batteries to bleach and bread to Biscoff biscuits reported The Grocer.

Last summer Brits urged Poundland to change its name after finding products on sale for more than £1.

Taking to Reddit, one disgruntled customer shared a snap from a toiletries aisle inside one of the discount supermarket’s branches – which showed every item priced at £2 or more.

Discounted prices go beyond grocery items and include table mats, soap dispensers, vases and a three-piece tea towel for £1.

Some childrens, women’s and baby clothes are priced from £1.50.

Last year the discount chain filed a trademark application for “Home of the £1” after using the slogan when it reduced its everyday lines of milk, bread, sugar and eggs.

The retailer has also launched a loyaltyt app Poundland Perks which includes a 25p saving on a Chicago Town Twin Cheese Pizza, and a 50p saving on a £2 bag of McCain chips.

Poundland commercial director CJ Antal-Smith said: “According to the Bank of England, Poundland should be £2.42-land today, based on the way inflation has risen since it opened its first store 35 years ago,” said

“But Poundland is all about defying inflation and delivering amazing value and our customers are being very clear that they need us to be at our best in 2025 in the face of continued pressure on household budgets.

“We know that’s our job, and we’ll do all we can to deliver the promise of amazing value on the items they need.”
