A swanky new TV advert trying to show Milton Keynes as the stylish city it truly is has had to resort to filming streets nearly 400 miles away.

Citizens from the Buckinghamshire city have been left puzzled after the advert showed no sign of the endearing brutalist 1960s architecture, concrete cows or the giant dead tree in the shopping centre.

Instead, the directors tried to be as far away from Milton Keynes as possible, filming the streets of what appears to be Glasgow – a six hour drive away up the A1.

Models wearing the latest fashions are seen walking past buildings and parks which anyone who has ever been to Milton Keynes knows does not belong.

The advert appears to have been filmed on John Street and the Blythswood Hotel in the Scottish city.

Bosses from the centre:mk shopping outlet which commissioned the advert insisted they weren’t trying to represent a specific location, despite the fact their building and business is entirely Milton Keynes based.

They said: ‘Our TV ad was not shot in Milton Keynes. It wasn’t supposed to represent a specific location, it’s designed to show how the trends and outfits could be worn in your everyday life, whether out with friends in the daytime or going out for the evening.

‘It was supposed to be about the fashion itself rather than the location it was shot, which is just a backdrop to the models and the outfits they are wearing.

‘Our visitors come to centre:mk from miles around, from as far as Birmingham, Cambridge, Oxford, St Albans and even London as we are a regional destination, so the ad was more of a lifestyle ad to showcase the clothes, all of which are available at the shops in centre:mk.

‘The last frame of the ad gives the shops we featured and our location, off junction 14 of the M1.’

If you are desperate to catch the advert and its lack of Milton Keynes, it is being shown on TV, cinemas and online.

Some Milton Keynes residents are naturally offended by their city’s erasure, with one person commenting on YouTube: ‘Are we that ashamed of MK that you don’t use it in the advert?’

Another added: ‘I think the ad is more for the fashion side than the place.’
