A man was killed and two others were injured after a ‘senseless’ shooting in a residential area in Sydenham, south London.

The emergency services were alerted at about 10.10am today after reports of a shooting in the Wells Park Road, SE26, area.

When officers and the ambulance service arrived at the scene, they discovered a man who had been shot and injured.

Despite the best efforts of the ambulance crews, he died at the scene.

A woman was also shot, suffering injuries to her legs.

She was rushed to the hospital where she remains with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

A third person went to the hospital with suspected gunshot injuries, but his condition is yet to be confirmed, Metropolitan Police said.

So far, there have been no arrests.

Detectives are working to find out the victim’s identity and to contact his family.

A post-mortem examination will be arranged, the force said.

Commander Peter Stevens said: ‘I know people will be shocked by this senseless act of violence, all the more so on a Sunday morning in a residential area. I share their concerns and can assure the local community that the Met’s response, alongside our partners, has been rapid.

‘We are determined to safeguard the community, to get to the bottom of what happened here and bring those responsible to justice.

‘You will see a considerable number of additional officers in the area, including forensic experts. Police cordons are likely to remain in place for some time so that they can carry out their vital work.

‘Officers will also be patrolling the area. I urge anyone with information to speak with those officers.

‘A number of people have already contacted us, and we need that flow of information from anyone who saw or heard anything of note to continue. We also need to hear from anyone who has phone, CCTV or doorbell footage that may help the investigation.’

Now detectives are appealing for information following the fatal incident and anyone with information is asked to contact the force or the independent charity Crimestoppers to make an anonymous report.

A stretch of Wells Park Road remains closed in both directions between Kirkdale and Longton Avenue.

Bus routes 202 and 356 have been diverted.

Locals said on social media seeing a helicopter land at Wells Park while others spotted armed officers at the scene.
