Major motorway blocked after lorry overturns and leaves one person injured
Traffic is building up on the M6, the longest motorway in Britain, in the Stoke-on-Trent area after a truck overturned this morning.
At least one person was injured and had to be freed from the tipped-over lorry between Junction 17 and 18. Police were called to the scene at around 3.55am, but officials doubt the traffic will clear anytime soon. Normal conditions are not expected until 10.45am.
Traffic cameras show a build-up by J17 (Sandbach/Congleton) as three of the four lanes are closed.
Things aren’t exactly any better on the train tracks. Amid a raft of Met Office amber and yellow weather warnings for rain, wind and snow, National Rail says the poor weather will impact journeys until Thursday.
Among them is ScotRail, where speed restrictions have been implemented on several routes – just in time for rush hour. Over on the London Underground, various lines as well as the Elizabeth Line and Overground routes are running on reduced service or part-closed.

Three TfL lines disrupted
Ahead of the celebrations tonight, three TfL routes are currently disrupted.
The Elizabeth line has reduced service to/from the Liverpool Street National Rail platforms.
No trains are running between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge due to a train shortage while engineers fix damage caused by leaf fall.
While on the Weaver line, there is no service between Liverpool Street and London Fields until New Years Day.
M6 update
According to National Highways, the situation on the M6 is now ‘minor’. Lanes one to three are currently shut.
The overturned lorry should be cleared by 10.45am at the latest, which is also when normal traffic conditions will resume.
The fire service said of the incident: ‘Firefighters were called to rescue one person from a lorry that had overturned on its side. Crews were able to free the casualty and assess them on the scene.
‘It is believed their injuries are non-life-threatening, and the casualty was handed over to paramedics. Police and highways are also on scene and lanes one to three are closed while the motorway is cleared.’
Poor weather will disrupt train journeys until Thursday, National Rail says
Today alone, there are six weather warnings for rain, wind and snow – one amber and five yellow alerts.
And the weather will be especially rough today, with National Rail expecting railway services to be impacted. Speed restrictions may be enforced, flooding and winds may damage infrastructure and the tracks may freeze over.
Right now, ScotRail is the only operator affected. Speed restrictions are in place:
- Inverness – Perth
- Inverness – Kyle of Lochalsh
- Inverness – Wick
- Perth – Stirling
- Edinburgh – Inverness
- Glasgow Queen Street – Inverness – Aberdeen – Dundee – Perth
- Glasgow Queen Street – Oban – Mallaig
