A London train station was named one of the best stations in Europe – the only UK station to make the top 10 list.

With the daily grind marred by train delays, it’s too easy to forget that many of the railway stations boast shops and restaurants designed to make the travel experience more bearable.

London Bridge is one of these stations, according to experts at the Washington DC-based Consumer Choice Center.

The experts ranked dozens of stations across European cities such as London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Rome.

London Bridge was the only UK station to make the top ten cut.

It scored 85 out of 118 points and was in the tie-ten spot with Leipzig main station, according to the European Railway Station Index 2024.

Top 10 train stations in Europe

The European Railway Station Index 2024 has listed the top 10 train stations for passenger convenience.

  1. Zurich Hauptbahnhof, Zurich
  2. Bern Railway Station, Bern
  3. Utrecht Centraal, Utrecht
  4. Gare du Nord, Paris
  5. Gare de Lyon, Paris
  6. Gare Montparnasse, Paris
  7. Wien Hauptbahnhof, Vienna
  8. Roma Termini, Rome
  9. Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris
  10. London Bridge, London and Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, Leipzig

The index looked at stations that had 30 million or more passengers annually.

Stations were given points based on 16 categories, including the number of passengers, how long station ticket offices were open, variety of tickets available, train delays, accessibility and elevators and the number of shops and restaurants.

Other London stations included in the top 50 list were St Pancras International on the 17th spot (76 points), London Liverpool Street on the 20th spot (73 points) and London Victoria on the 22nd (72.5 points).

London Waterloo was ranked 30th, earning it 69 points overall.

The latest station index comes months after the UK government confirmed plans to renationalise Britain’s railways.

The first rail operators set to be brought back under public ownership were revealed in December, with South Western Railway up for it in May, followed by C2C in July and Greater Anglia in the autumn.

However, the experts who created the ranking said they are not convinced that the renationalisation plan will solve Britain’s train woes.

They said: ‘We remain sceptical that the planned nationalization addresses the fundamental supply-demand disconnect in British railways.’

Renationalising the UK railways under the current plan ‘will leave British consumers with far fewer choices,’ the report claimed.
