Killer drink driver filmed saying ‘I don’t care, I just want to go to bed’

A drink driver who killed his friend told police, ‘I don’t care, I just want to go bed to bed,’ as they treated to breathalyse him.

Jack Nixon, a 27-year-old from Dover, had spent a night drinking in Canterbury before giving his three friends a lift home on October 9, 2022.

Nixon sat behind the wheel without a driving license, valid insurance or MOT, and under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

He drove his Volkswagen Polo out of a car park and collided with the pay machine on his way out before visiting a drive-through and picking up some more beers.

Ten minutes later, Nixon lost control of the vehicle and collided with a railway bridge on Cornwall Road, Deal, killing a 21-year-old passenger from the Aylesham area.

The other two occupants were injured and sent to the hospital.

Nixon was arrested on the scene, with breathalyser tests showing he had 58mg of alcohol and cannabis in his system. Officers found ketamine and cannabis in the Volkswagen, too.

‘I can’t, I can’t. I don’t know why you’re holding it in front of me I can’t,’ he told police during the road-side test.

Shockingly, he added: ‘I really want to go to bed. I don’t even care about other people. I just want to go to bed.’

In August at Canterbury Crown Court, Nixon admitted causing a death by careless driving through alcohol, causing death by driving while unlicensed, and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving.

He was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison. Upon his release, he will be disqualified from driving for seven years.

Following the closure of the case, Detective Constable Kayleigh Archer said: ‘It is staggering to consider that after drinking alcohol during a night out Nixon got behind the wheel of the car and even stopped to buy more alcohol during his journey before the very worst scenario happened.

‘His actions that night had far-reaching, tragic repercussions for all involved, as well as their families and friends. Two people were injured, one seriously, and the collision resulted in someone losing their life.

‘While Nixon will now go to prison for what he did, my thoughts remain with those who are left behind to come to terms with their loss.’
