Inside the abandoned mental health hospital now a haven for ghost hunters

An abandoned mental asylum known for its harsh regime still stands on the outskirts of Leeds, West Yorkshire.

But the former mental health hospital, not in use since the 1990s, has fallen into disrepair over the years, as shown by eerie images of its interiors.

Pictures taken inside Meanwood Park Hospital show graffiti on walls, paint peeling off and debris and dirt scattered on the ground.

Closets can be seen abandoned and empty, with pieces of the fallen off ceiling and plaster on top and all around them.

Dead wild animals can also be seen lying around, adding to the creepiness of the abandoned building.

Unsurprisingly, after being deserted for more than two decades, the creepy hospital has now become a haven for ghost hunters.

The interest of fans of the supernatural in Meanwood Park Hospital began years ago, with some staff members and inmates reportedly seeing a “grey lady” stalking the corridors when it was still open.

The hospital, known as the “mansion”, sits on 178 acres of sprawling grounds and first began admitting patients 105 years ago.

The first patient of the hospital, developed as a “colony for the mentally deficient”, was a 10-year-old boy, Frank Tottie.

The child arrived at the hospital in August 1919, after the Leeds Corporation rented and then bought the building.

Frank lived there for the rest of his life, until he died in November 1979.

The “mansion” originally housed around 90 patients, but it grew over the years to the point of being able to accommodate more than 800 people.

The local authority first had responsibility for its upkeep before the NHS took over the hospital in 1948. It eventually closed in the late 1990s.
