Incredible new train station that will completely transform huge UK city

A UK city is about to be handed a new railway station to help boost transport links in the area. Gabalfa Station will be built on the Methyr line in the Gabalfa district of Cardiff, Wales.

It will form part of the South Wales Metro, and is set to open in 2028. The station will be built on a former coal year next to the existing railway lines there.

Gabalfa station is one of five new stations set to be built under the plans. Ely Mill, Butetown, Crwys Road, and Cardiff East are the other stations also set to be built.

The plan has been devised by South Wales Mainline Programme, aiming to increase the frequency and speed of rail journeys from South West Wales to Bristol.

This comes as Transport for Wales and Cardiff Council unveil plans for a new tram network in Cardiff too.

Released in September, the plans will help connect “some of the most deprived communities” in the city, according to Crossrail.

Council cabinet member Dan D’eath said: “Subject to funding, the Cardiff Crossrail will eventually run from the north-west of the city all the way to the east of the city connecting with the proposed Parkway railway station.

“To start this process, the first phase of the scheme must be built between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay.”

The Cardiff Crossrail project will stretch across the Welsh capital from the village of Creigiau, in the north-west, to Newport Road in the east.

Only the first stage of the project has secured funding, connecting Cardiff Central station with Cardiff Bay by rail.

Part of the plans will involve a new new two-platform stop in the rear car park of central station.
