Huge fire close to UK’s oldest cathedral as 30ft flames rip through building
Firefighters have been tackling a huge blaze at a former Debenhams store in Canterbury overnight.
Rescue teams were called just after 8pm last night, with more than 40 firefighters called to the put out the flames.
The fire broke out in the High Street, which is less than 200 yards from the historic Canterbury Cathedral – one of the oldest buildings in the UK.
People are being advised to keep their windows and doors closed around the Canterbury High Street area due to a large amount of smoke coming from a building fire.
Initially, five fire engines arrived at the scene, but due to the intensity of the fire, additional specialist units, including the Technical Rescue Unit and Urban Search and Rescue, were deployed.
Fire crews are utilizing advanced technology, including drones equipped with thermal imaging, to aid in the firefighting efforts. Specialist Merlo equipment is also being used to support the operation.
A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘People are being advised to keep their windows and doors closed around the Canterbury High Street area due to a large amount of smoke coming from a building fire.
‘Eight fire engines and a height vehicle are currently in attendance and crews are working to extinguish the flames.
‘Please share this advice with any loved ones who may be affected, but may not have access to the internet.’
