Girl, 15, found dead at high school
A girl, 15, has died suddenly at a school in the Scottish Borders.
The Jedburgh Grammar School pupil, who has not been named, was found in the toilet of the school Tuesday afternoon.
Despite attempts to resuscitate the teenager after emergency services arrived at around 2.20pm, she died shortly after.
Police do not consider her death suspicious.
Jedburgh Grammar School, a secondary school of some 440 pupils in Jedburgh, closed early that day.
No public notices on the school’s website or social media platforms suggest the school is closed today but this week’s parents’ evening and other school events have been cancelled this week.
Councillors said educational psychologists – who offer counselling support for schoolchildren and teachers – have been sent to the school site.
Local councillor Lesley Munro said in a letter to parents: ‘Following the critical incident at the school on Tuesday, we want to confirm that supports will be in place on Wednesday to wrap around the school community at this difficult time.
‘These supports will include educational psychologists, trained officers, school staff, and partners who will be available for as long as needed.
‘If you have any concerns about your child or children, please do not hesitate to contact the school through their class or pastoral teacher, or in whatever way would be your normal method of communication.
‘As I’m sure you understand, it is not appropriate to continue with planned events for now, and parents’ evenings planned for this week will be rescheduled for a later date.’
Councillor Scott Hamilton said on Facebook: ‘Reports have reached me of a tragic and critical incident that occurred at Jedburgh Grammar Campus earlier today.
‘My thoughts and prayers are with all those involved. I know the team both at the Campus and [Scottish Borders Council] will look to support all those affected.’
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘Around 2.55pm on Tuesday November 52024, we were called to a school in the Jedburgh area following concern for a 15-year-old girl.
‘Police and ambulance attended however she was pronounced dead a short time later.
‘The death is not believed to be suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.’
Police Scotland, Jedburgh Grammar School and the Scottish Borders Council have been approached for comment.
