Fresh appeal to identify body pulled from a canal 14 years ago

Police have launched a fresh appeal to identify a man found dead in a canal 14 years ago.

West Midlands Police have issued an e-fit image in a bid to help find any friends of family of the man who was found in the Fazeley Canal in Edington, Birmingham at about 8am on November 4, 2010.

The man was never identified despite extensive inquiries into the case, and West Midlands Police said it is one of the longest-running cases for its Unresolved Missing Persons Investigation Team.

The man died from drowning, a post-mortem examination held 14 years gao discovered.

An inquest into his death took place at the time, so he was able to be laid to rest.

Detective Constable Darryl Towle said: ‘Our aim is always to find out who these people are to help them, their families and friends, find peace.’

At around 8am on Thursday 4 November 2010, the man?s body was discovered in the Fazeley Canal near to Wheelwright Road and Tyburn Road, Erdington, by a passerby. Thought to be in his 50s, he was wearing a dark coloured jumper with white horizontal stripes, black shoes (with Velcro fasteners), and brown socks. He was 5ft 7ins tall, with stubble and greying brown collar-length hair. Extensive enquiries were carried out in the area at the time but he remains unidentified.

The man was found with no identification on him, but he was thought to be in his 50s.

He was wearing a dark-coloured jumper with white horizontal stripes, black shoes with Velcro fasteners and brown socks.

He was described as being 5ft7in tall, with stubble and greying brown collar-length hair.

The Detective said he did not match the description of anybody reported missing at the time.

‘Fourteen years on we’re still determined to find out who he was and trace any family or friends,’ he continued.
