Four people in hospital as double-decker bus crashes into railway bridge
Four people have been rushed to hospital after the roof of a double-decker bus was torn off when it hit a railway bridge.
Emergency services were called to the incident on Culzean Crescent in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, shortly before 2pm on Thursday, with police and ambulance crews in attendance.
Photos from the incident reveal the bus’s upper deck exposed, with the roof lying detached on the road.
Debris from the crash was scattered across the area.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 1.55pm to attend an incident on Culzean Crescent, Kilmarnock.
“One ambulance and three special operations response teams were dispatched to the scene and four patients were transported to University Hospital Crosshouse.’
Police Scotland reported that the road has been closed in both directions to facilitate emergency response and urged the public to avoid the area.
Stagecoach West Scotland confirmed the incident involved their route 6 service between Kilmarnock Bus Station and New Farm Loch.
“Investigations are ongoing, and we are working closely with Police Scotland,” a spokesperson said.
ScotRail said that no train services were affected, and Network Rail specialists inspected the bridge, confirming it had not sustained any structural damage.
This incident comes just days after a similar crash in Glasgow, where another double-decker bus collided with a railway bridge.
That collision left a 60-year-old man in critical condition and injured several others.
Local councillor Barry Douglas expressed his concern, as he said: “I hope everyone on the bus and in the area is okay. Residents should stay clear of the site and check with ScotRail for any potential delays.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash in Kilmarnock.
