Four motorists were taken to hospital after a crash that closed the M23 in Surrey.

Drivers heading to Gatwick Airport faced severe delays on the M23 after a multi-vehicle crash this morning.

The motorway was closed southbound for hours after the crash between junction J9 (Gatwick) and J10 (Crawley) before it reopened at about 1pm.

South East Coast Ambulance Service told Metro it assessed four patients and treated them at the scene.

‘Three patients were then taken to East Surrey Hospital for further checks and treatment,’ it said.

Heavy congestion built in the area, with traffic snarling back for miles towards the M25.

All emergency services were at the scene along with traffic officers.

The crash has left debris and spillage on the carriageway.

National Highways said: ‘Surrey Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service are working at the scene of this multi-vehicle collision.

‘National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene and assisting the emergency services with traffic management.’

Traffic was trapped within the closure which was first reported shortly after 10am.
