Former Norwich City player Devonte Aransibia dies aged 26

Former Norwich City academy player Devonte Aransibia has died aged 26. 

The footballer’s death was confirmed by Norwich, which he left in 2019, and Maidstone United, which he had played for since May 2023.

His cause of death has not been revealed.

Bill Williams, director of football at Maidstone United, said: “We are shocked and saddened by the news of Devonte’s passing.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at what will be an incredibly difficult time for them.

“Although Devonte was only with us for a relatively short time, like all players past and present, he was welcomed into the Maidstone United family and all those who met him and watched him play will mourn the loss of someone so young.

“I know our management team will pay tribute in due course, while supporting our players who will undoubtedly be impacted by the loss of someone who was a teammate just last season.

“Rest in peace, Devonte.”

‘Embodiment of kindness and compassion’

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to raise money for Aransibia’s family, which has raised more than £10,900.

The footballer was described on the website as a “loving partner, devoted father, cherished son, and dear friend to so many”.

“Dev was the embodiment of kindness and compassion, always ready with a warm smile,” the website read.

“His infectious laughter and generous spirit brightened every room he entered, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

“Beyond his loving nature, Dev was a talented footballer whose passion and drive propelled him to great success on the pitch.”

Aransibia joined Norwich City’s academy in 2013 and progressed through the youth age groups.

After leaving, he went on to represent several non-league clubs including Chelmsford, Welling and Royston Town.

Norwich City said there will be a “period of applause” for their former player before their Sky Bet Championship fixture against Preston North End and all staff will wear black armbands.

Maidstone United also said there would be a minute’s silence before their game against Aveley on Tuesday evening.
