Even more snow coming at the weekend after freezing Arctic blast
Going to Tesco has felt more like trekking to the North Pole this week, and the cold weather isn’t over yet.
The Met Office has issued new weather warnings for snow and ice, and said some areas could see as much as 20cm fall tonight.
Saturday is set to bring even more snow from the Midlands northwards, though some areas further south will just get a lot of rain.
It comes as an Arctic blast brought a proper slice of winter to the UK, with widespread frost and some areas looking more like Lapland.
Widespread disruption included a National Express coach filmed sliding down a hill, people having to abandon their cars, and health alerts issued for danger to vulnerable people.
But you can’t deny it looked beautiful in areas with a big blanket of the stuff.
So if you’re a snow-lover, you could be in luck this weekend:
The lowest temperature recorded last night was -7.5°C in Warcop, Cumbria, and the average low for the whole nation is 4°C at this time of year.
What Met Office UK weather warnings are in place?
A yellow warning for snow showers and possible hail is in place in parts of north and west Scotland, from now until midday tomorrow.
Between 2cm and 5cm of snow is expected and it could reach 10cm in some parts of the north-west mainland, with higher ground even seeing 15cm to 20cm.
A yellow warning for ice with a ‘few sleet or snow showers’ has been posted for the same time in most of Scotland, the East and West Midlands, the east, north-east and north-west of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Yorkshire.
Parts of south-west England have also received a new yellow warning for snow between 5am and 3pm tomorrow, with 5cm to 10cm predicted in higher parts of Dartmoor.
Heavy snow is expected on Saturday followed by a ‘rapid thaw’ and rain on Saturday night in north-east and north-west England, the West Midlands, Yorkshire, and much of Scotland.
The Met Office issued a yellow warning and said floodwater could cause danger to life, some rural communities could become cut off, and there may be travel disruption.
New yellow warnings for rain have also been published from Saturday to Sunday morning in south-west England and Wales.
Met Office spokesperson Andrea Bishop said: ‘A deep area of low pressure is expected to bring a spell of prolonged and, at times, heavy rainfall across a large part of the UK this weekend.
‘Fifty to 75mm of rain is expected to fall fairly widely during this time with a chance that some places over Dartmoor could see 100-125mm.’
More than 100 schools or nurseries were closed in Scotland because of the weather today.
A sharp rise in vehicle breakdowns was also reported as drivers’ batteries failed due to cold weather and frost caused hazards on the roads., the RAC said.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued the first amber cold weather health alert of the season, warning conditions could be dangerous for vulnerable people, including the elderly.
