British tourist gets instant karma after sparking cigarette near gas bottles

A British tourist got the fright of their life when they were drenched with a bucket of water – as they tried to light a cigarette right next to a gas canister.

The middle-aged tourist with an East London-sounding accent had been at the Chang Phuak street food attraction with friends in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Wednesday night.

But when he sparked a cigarette next to a gas tank used to power the stoves, the cook said she politely asked him to put it out, which is when he became aggressive.

The Brit argued that it was his ‘personal freedom’ to be able to smoke wherever he liked, but staff warned him that it was a safety risk.

And a bystander managed to capture the moment on camera.

In the footage, the cooks’ anger is plain to see as they plead with the man to move away from the gas tank.

The man responds with: ‘You f*** off. You did it first. It’s nothing to do with you. You stupid b****.’

The staff ultimately responded by hurling a bucket of water at the disruptive tourist as he retreated.

An onlooker, named Naruebon Khonthee, said that the stall vendor’s sister arrived after the video and helped to calm the situation.

The Brit reportedly apologised for his behaviour and was sent on is way, with friends helping to placate him.

Ms Khonthee said: ‘I was standing at a market stall next to the fight.

‘I heard shouting and started to record what happened. He said it was his personal freedom to be able to smoke.

‘I thought the foreigner was going to become violent. He was so big.’

The stall owner has apologised on behalf of her staff for throwing water over the smoker.

She said: ‘The staff were concerned that his cigarette would start a fire, so initially they threw the water on the cigarette when it was on the ground. But the situation escalated and the water was thrown at the man.’

Police Lieutenant Colonel Awirut Sukyaem from the Chiang Mai provincial force said that no complaints had been received about the tourist – but they would investigate if a report was filed.
