Armed police swarm street near school after reports of person with knives

Armed police were scrambled to a road in Tilehurst, Reading after reports of “a suspicious person in possession of bladed items” minutes from a primary school, Thames Valley Police has confirmed.

The force said: “Armed officers swiftly attended Corwen Road, Tilehurst, and searches and investigations have been carried out.

“The report remains as unconfirmed at this time. We continue to investigate the report and are working to establish the circumstances of this incident.” Thames Valley Police added that there will be extra patrols in the area.

Moorlands Primary School, which is just moments from Corwen Road, has not been evacuated according to its office, which added there has not been any incident on-site.

According to the Reading Chronicle, police have also been seen near St Michael’s Primary School and the English Martyrs Catholic Primary School.

Thames Valley’s full statement read: “We received an unconfirmed report of a suspicious person in possession of bladed items at around 12.40pm this afternoon (7/2).

“Armed officers swiftly attended Corwen Road, Tilehurst, and searches and investigations have been carried out. “The report remains as unconfirmed at this time.

“We continue to investigate the report and are working to establish the circumstances of this incident.

“We appreciate the concern this incident may cause but do not believe there to be a wider threat to the community at this time and members of the public will see extra patrols in the area .

“We would appeal to anyone who with information or who was in the area this afternoon and may have footage to contact the force.

“You can leave any information via our website or call 101, quoting investigation number 887 of today’s date (7/2). Reassurance patrols will be put in place”.
