The Sentry: Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa set for Sunday showdown in first PGA Tour event of 2025

Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa are set for a Sunday showdown at The Sentry with just one shot separating the pair after they both carded 11-under 62s in round three.

Former Masters champion Matsuyama leads on 27 under par at Kapalua with two-time major champion Morikawa on 26 under in the first PGA Tour event of 2025.

Matsuyama had an eagle putt at 18 to tie the course record but had to settle for birdie, one of 11 the Japanese registered as he set a career personal best on a blemish-free day in Hawaii and retained his second-round lead.

American Morikawa also closed with a birdie, his ninth of the round to go alongside a 25-foot eagle at the par-five fifth that temporarily took him into the lead.

“Collin played well and I just kind of followed him, so good day,” said Matsuyama. “It was a lot of fun but I would like for him to take it easy tomorrow.”

Morikawa said, about performing in the final round: “You look back at the greats, they did. You look back at Tiger [Woods], he did that every single week.

“I think if I asked myself, ‘Did I do that the past six years, every time?’ Probably not, But it’s hard. What I’m going into this year saying is, ‘I’ve got four days, let’s see what I can do.'”

Belgium’s Thomas Detry is five shots behind Matsuyama in third on 22 under par after an eight-under Saturday, with Korea’s Sungjae Im one further back on 21 under after matching Matsuyama and Morikawa’s 11-under 62s.

England’s Harry Hall is fifth on 20 under after a third-round 66.
