China launches new amphibious assault ship, enhancing naval power

China launched Friday its first Type 076 amphibious assault ship, Sichuan, a vessel designed to strengthen the navy’s combat capabilities in distant waters.

China’s largest amphibious assault ship to date, Sichuan displaces 40,000 tonnes and features advanced technologies such as an electromagnetic catapult, allowing fighter jets to launch directly from its deck, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

The ship is designed to deploy ground troops via landing crafts while offering air support. 

Developed by Chinese researchers, it is also equipped with an “arrestor technology” system that enables fighter jets to land on its deck.

China’s first amphibious assault ships, the Type 075, were introduced in 2019. 

The Chinese navy has been modernising its forces for over 10 years to achieve global operational capability rather than remain confined to waters near the country’s mainland. 

Previously, Beijing deployed fighter jets using new electromagnetic technology on its domestically built aircraft carrier, Fujian, which was launched two years ago.

According to the Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times tabloid, military analyst Song Zhongping described the Sichuan as a “light aircraft carrier”. The ship will undergo further assessments, including sea trials.

China, which has the world’s largest navy, is also developing a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, allowing ships to operate in distant waters without requiring refuelling bases. 

In comparison, the US currently operates 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, which enable it to maintain strike groups worldwide, including in the Asia-Pacific region.
