Why There Are Less Than 50 Viltrumites In Invincible & How It Sets Up The Show’s Biggest War

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episodes 1-4, and the comic series.Invincible‘s Viltrumite army has been portrayed as a seemingly unstoppable force ever since the first season, but the show’s latest episode just revealed a huge bombshell that will change the story forever. After Allen the Alien and Omni-Man escaped Viltrumite captivity, Allen was eager to find safety in case reinforcements arrived. Nolan was a lot calmer though, explaining that no one would come before telling his new ally about Viltrum’s biggest secret. He informs Allen that fewer than 50 pure-blooded Viltrumites remained, suggesting his change of heart during Invincible season 2’s ending may be permanent.

Having Omni-Man fighting back against his own people was already a great sign for Allen and the Coalition of Planets, but finding out there are so few Viltrumites remaining is even more positive. Despite Mark and Oliver looking stronger than ever in season 3 and Battle Beast opposing the central antagonists, fighting against so many Viltrumites seemed like an almost impossible task for Invincible‘s main heroes. However, Omni-Man’s reveal changes that, offering hope that with the right numbers, the Viltrumite resistance can actually oppose the Empire, but the show has kept the reasoning behind Viltrum’s dwindling numbers a secret.

Why There Are So Few Viltrumites In Invincible

Their Brutal Civil War & The Coalition Of Planet’s Virus Left Very Few Pure-Blooded Viltrumites Remaining

In the very first season, it was established that Viltrumites killed their own people to establish the strongest among them, confirming that many potentially powerful warriors were murdered, simply because they couldn’t measure up to those who survived the purge. However, the planet still had healthy numbers, which plummeted thanks to a deadly virus. Although the TV shows only recently introduced the Coalition of Planets, they’ve already been working in the background to stop the Viltrumite Empire, as they created a disease that was able to wipe out most of the population, hence Viltrum having less than 50 pure-blooded survivors.

Allen seemed genuinely shocked by this information despite working with the Coalition of Planets, as Omni-Man’s comment appeared to be a major surprise. Invincible 2 season subtly referenced the Scourge Virus through Kregg, as the Viltrumite is missing an eye. Although the show has yet to explain what happened to him, the comics explain his injury is a result of the virus, which he managed to survive despite its lasting impact. Kregg may have maintained his strength, but this disease was able to claim over 99% of the population, highlighting just how deadly the Coalition’s secret weapon really was.

What Invincible Season 3, Episode 4’s Twist Means For The War Against Viltrum

With Viltrum’s army being much smaller than first anticipated, it makes the upcoming war much more winnable. Anissa looked way stronger than Mark in Invincible season 2, indicating that there was a turbulent future ahead for Earth and any other planet that tried to resist the Viltrumite Empire. However, Mark has since gotten more powerful, and Battle Beast’s return alongside Omni-Man’s change of heart suggests there are some capable fighters who could oppose the villains. Vidor and Thula have already been badly injured, while Allen and Omni-Man killed a Vilrtumite, proving these elite beings are not invincible.

Invincible Just Confirmed Mark Grayson’s Biggest Weakness

Mark Grayson has continued to get stronger and became one of Invincible’s most dangerous characters, but the show just exposed his main weakness.

Unfortunately, despite Earth having some fierce heroes, few are capable of lasting long against a Viltrumite, but they may provide strategies that delay and distract their opponents, allowing the better fighters to strike. Opposing the Empire will still be a massive challenge, especially with Viltrum’s most powerful warriors still to be introduced, but season 3, episode 4’s reveal provides a lot more hope for the impending war. Those that did survive the virus are the planet’s strongest combatants, but with Omni-Man standing against them, the resistance can at least exploit their weaknesses, and he offers their best chance at victory.

Has Omni-Man Officially Joined The Coalition Now?

Omni-Man Seems Fully Committed To Stopping His People’s Reign Of Terror

Omni-Man’s decision to assist Allen during the prison escape suggests he’s now an official part of the Coalition. After his massacre in season 1, he spent much of season 2 feeling conflicted. Nolan had developed some real human emotions and genuinely cared about his family, both on Earth and Thraxa, yet felt like a traitor to his people. Even after being captured and sentenced to death by the Viltrumites, Nolan was willing to accept his fate, up until he believed Allen was about to die at the hands of his captors, prompting him to fight back.

With Omni-Man officially helping kill a Viltrumite, it seems there is no turning back, and revealing his people’s secret to Allen suggests he’s fully on the Coalition’s side. In an attempt to find redemption, Nolan looks set to aid those rebelling against the Empire as he wants to put an end to their reign of terror once and for all. As a result, Earth’s former protector seems destined to be a true hero going forward in Invincible, and while he may never be able to make amends for his past sins, helping defeat the Viltrumites is still a worthy cause.
