Although it isn’t touched on until the epilogue at the end of Black Mass, Billy Bulger had an interesting career after leaving the Massachusetts State Senate. In 1995, Billy Bulger was appointed the president of the University of Massachusetts, with this happening near the end of his time serving as the President of the Massachusetts State Senate. Billy Bulger continued to serve in this role after leaving the State Senate, with him serving as the President of the University of Massachusetts until his involvement with his brother forced him to resign in 2003.

Billy Bulger’s appointment as president of the university was always controversial, as some weren’t fans of him getting the job despite his lack of experience in higher education. Billy testified on the matter in 2001 and 2003, explaining that he didn’t urge Whitey to turn himself in and that Whitey’s crimes didn’t interfere with his governmental duties.

Before testifying in front of a Congressional committee in 2003, Billy Bulger was granted immunity from obstruction of justice charges. Billy Bulger also filled a variety of other roles after leaving the University of Massachusetts. At one point, Billy was the president of and a member of the board of trustees of the Boston Public Library. He is also a member of the board of trustees for the Massachusetts General Hospital, the McLean Hospital, and the Museum of Fine Arts. On top of that, Billy Bulger also is the overseer emeritus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. As has clearly been shown, his resignation from the University of Massachusetts was far from the end of his career.

Billy Bulger is currently continuing to receive a pension from his role as the President of the University of Massachusetts, with him still being involved in some of his other roles.
