Two Of 2024’s Highest-Grossing Movies At The Box Office Are Now Streaming On Netflix

Two of the highest-grossing movies of 2024, Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, are now available to stream on Netflix. 2024 was a major year for movies, with some of the biggest releases including the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Deadpool & Wolverine and part one of the theatrical adaptation of the beloved musical Wicked. Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were certainly among the biggest from 2024 as well.

Dune: Part Two was released in US theaters on March 1st, 2024, and was the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2021 movie Dune, which starred Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya among Dune’s cast of characters. The films are based on the book series of the same name, which began in the 1960s and has influenced other massive franchises, such as Star Wars. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released in the US on March 29th, 2024, and is the latest installment in the long-running Godzilla and King Kong franchises.

Both Movies Quickly Began Trending On The Streaming Site

Given the significant histories of both Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it’s little surprise that both movies began trending on Netflix soon after they were released on the streaming platform. Dune: Part Two debuted on Netflix on December 31st, 2024, and within a matter of days, it was one of the platform’s top 10 trending movies. Likewise, Netflix added Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on December 23rd, 2024, and it quickly rose to the streaming platform’s top 10 trending movies.

Both Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were also among the highest-grossing movies of 2024. Although neither was the single highest-earning release of the year, Dune: Part Two raked in an impressive $282 million at the box office in the US, putting it at seventh overall, and $714 million worldwide, placing it in fifth. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was just behind it in box office numbers, earning $196 million in the US, making it the ninth-highest at the domestic box office in 2024, and $571 million worldwide, placing it in seventh.

Disney Dominated At The Box Office In 2024

In 2024, Disney dominated the domestic and worldwide box offices, with Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2 topping the charts for the year’s highest-grossing movies. Inside Out 2 made an incredible $652 million at the domestic box office and $1.69 billion worldwide. Deadpool & Wolverine, which saw the return of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and marked both characters’ introductions to the MCU timeline, made $636 million in the US and $1.34 billion worldwide.

Among the other highest earners in 2024 (although the rankings varied between the domestic and worldwide box offices) were Wicked, Despicable Me 4, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Given how many of the highest-grossing movies of 2024 fall under the larger Disney umbrella, including Pixar and MCU movies, many of the top earners will be streaming on Disney+, not Netflix. Nevertheless, several major movies from 2024 are also now available on Netflix, in addition to Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Many other major movies from 2024 have recently arrived on Netflix as well. Two Chris Hemsworth movies are currently trending on Netflix, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which was released on May 24th, 2024. Furiosa wasn’t as successful at the box office compared to many of its 2024 counterparts, as it earned $67 million at the domestic box office and $173 million worldwide. Nevertheless, it represents a popular franchise and has gained significant traction on the streaming platform.

Other recent Netflix additions include Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Madame Web, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Kung Fu Panda 4 proved incredibly popular at the box office in 2024, earning $361 million at the domestic box office, coming in fifth overall, and $969 million worldwide, ranking it third. Madame Web was a more complicated 2024 release, receiving plenty of attention, although most of it was rather critical.

With so many 2024 theatrical releases recently added to Netflix, it will be interesting to see how they perform on the platform over time. Of course, the movies will continue to compete with other popular 2024 releases that are now available on other streaming platforms, such as Deadpool & Wolverine on Disney+. Even so, at present, Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire are among the top-performing trending movies on Netflix.
