The Platform 2 Wisely Never Answers The Biggest Question You Have About The Franchise

Warning: Major spoilers for The Platform 2 below! The Platform 2 expands on the original film’s premise, but it smartly decides to leave the key question of the series a myster. The original Platform arrived on Netflix in 2019, with the story taking place inside a hellish prison dubbed a “Vertical Self-Management Center.” The film was an on-the-nose but potent metaphor for capitalism and the unfair distribution of wealth in society. The Platform’s ending left many unanswered questions, but it also felt like this was the point.

A new cast of characters is introduced in The Platform 2 – though some familiar faces also make surprise appearances. Returning director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s sequel is even more gruesome and bleak than the first entry, as new resident/prisoner Perempuan (Milena Smit) has to quickly adapt to life within the Vertical Self-Management Center. The Platform 2’s ending will once again leave viewers with questions, though it does at least expand on the fate of the original’s protagonist, Goreng (Iván Massagué).

The Platform 2 Still Keeps The Origin & Purpose Of The Prison A Mystery

The story behind the Vertical Self-Management Center isn’t revealed

The Platform gave audiences much to chew over once the credits rolled, including the fate of the young girl Goreng saved in the final moments. One thing it kept deliberately vague was the purpose of the Vertical Self-Management Center itself. Outside of interview scenes or montages of chefs prepping food for the platform, the story takes place entirely within the prison itself. The film never reveals who built this place or why, and while The Platform 2 opens up the premise a little further, the origin of the vast tower is still a mystery.

It would have been an obvious route for the sequel to pull back the curtain on The Administration even more, and explain why they constructed such a nightmarish place. Logically, it must be some kind of social experiment, with the authorities behind it wanting to see how different classes of people respond to the unique conditions inside. This is conjecture, of course, since The Platform 2 is smart to leave this part of the franchise a question mark.

Concrete Answers About The Platform’s Prison Would Only Be Disappointing

The Platform 3 shouldn’t explain the mystery either

Time will tell if The Platform 2 is enough of a success to spawn another sequel, but the film doesn’t overtly lay any groundwork for a third chapter. While some might be disappointed the second film doesn’t reveal more about the Vertical Self-Management Center, any definitive answers would only prove underwhelming. Either it’s exactly what it’s theorized to be – a twisted experiment by a sinister government – or it’s something more outlandish in origin.

A future
Platform
sequel explaining the prison was actually built by aliens or it really is Hell would only take away from the franchise’s mysteries.

The lack of answers is part of the hook for both Platform movies and allows people to fill in the blanks on their own. A future sequel explaining the prison was actually built by aliens or it really is Hell would only take away from that. An angle a third Platform could potentially explore is the existence of other Vertical Self-Management Centers in different countries, but again, a level of ambiguity about their purpose should be maintained.
