The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom – How To Beat Lord Jabu-Jabu

The lands of Hyrule are full of impostors in Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Unfortunately for Zelda, this evil reaches for the friendly Lord Jabu-Jabu of the Jabul Waters. Upon journeying to Jabu-Jabu’s den, Zelda and Tri quickly learn that the giant fish has been captured and replaced by a fake Jabu-Jabu. Zelda will need to defeat the impostor to rescue the real Lord Jabu-Jabu.

In the den, Zelda and Tri are greeted by Dradd and Kushara. These musicians are at odds but trying to rekindle their friendship. They seek an audience with Lord Jabu-Jabu, but the door to the fish’s chamber is sealed. Zelda and Tri must first unlock the door, fully reuniting Dradd and Kushara in the process, before facing the impostor boss.

The Jabul Waters Rift is a main quest in Echoes of Wisdom. So traveling to Jabu-Jabu’s den and defeating the impostor is essential. Before the fight, Zelda and Tri must complete a short and simple puzzle. Talking to Dradd and Kushara reveals that the golden stages needed to unlock the sealed door have been ruined. Zelda must fix the stages. Then, the pair of musicians can play a door-opening song.

Notice that both golden stages are covered in rubble. This is an indicator that the reverse bond ability is needed. Remove the rubble from both stages and set it aside. Then, the left stage, which is partially destroyed, will need to be reconstructed. Find the other stage piece in the water pool on the left, next to the den entrance. The stage piece is submerged, so dive and use the bond ability to drag it to the surface and connect it with the other half of the golden stage. Now, Dradd and Kushara can perform and open the door.

Defeat The Impostor Lord Jabu-Jabu

Swim Around To Avoid Being Swallowed While Casting Echoes

Once the stage has been set, a cut scene of Dradd and Kushara’s performance will trigger. With the duo’s relationship fully rekindled, they move into Lord Jabu-Jabu’s chambers to confront their friend about the whereabouts of their lost companions. To their shock, the giant fish has been replaced by an impostor who has trapped their companions inside its belly. Together, Dradd, Kushara, Zelda, and Tri, decide that the fake Jabu-Jabu must be defeated to free the prisoners. Jump into the water arena.

When Zelda lands in the water, Dradd and Kushara are cut off from the fight by a magical barrier. All they can do is watch Zelda take on the giant fish. This boss fight is a battle of endurance. Zelda must avoid taking damage by swimming around to dodge Jabu-Jabu’s attacks, while simultaneously deploying echoes to deal damage to the boss. Luckily, this long battle is repetitive. Once Zelda understands the boss’s patterns, defeating the impostor is simple. You can see what to expect in the video from Trophygamers above.

You’ll notice that the arena is covered in platforms where Zelda can hop out of the water. But beware that the arena will change and that these platforms only offer a false sense of security. For better or worse, this is a swimming fight. Jabu-Jabu begins the attack by releasing enemy fish from its mouth. These fish can be counterattacked with echoes, but for most of the fight, Zelda will be attempting to dodge these annoying enemies. Then Jabu-Jabu will submerge and swim around the arena, chasing Zelda.

Until you understand the swimming pattern of the boss, it’s best to just avoid taking damage, instead of launching echoes. After the chase attack is done, Jabu-Jabu will appear stationary at the top of the arena again. This is always an opportunity to attack. However, your attack window is small, because from this position Jabu-Jabu will perform a sucking attack, pulling everything in the water into its mouth. During this attack, the giant fish enters a state of invulnerability. All Zelda can do is swim against the current, or risk getting sucked into Jabu-Jabu’s mouth and taking damage before the fish spits her back out.

It’s critical to look for hearts dropped by enemy fish while swimming around the arena, so Zelda can stay healthy and even survive being swallowed if necessary.

When distance is created between Zelda and Jabu-Jabu, use echoes to attack the boss. Your echoes will only damage Jabu-Jabu when the boss is above water (or not invulnerable). When the impostor is chasing Zelda, its head will bob above the water while trying to eat the princess. The exposed head will take damage.

Jabu-Jabu launches enemy fish, chases Zelda, and sucks everything into its mouth. This is the repetitive pattern of the fight until Zelda’s echo attacks have damaged Lord Jabu-Jabu enough to initiate the second phase of the fight. A brief cut-scene shows the impostor getting frustrated, then its attacks become wilder and more aggressive. Still chasing Zelda around the arena, the path changes, but not the tactics for avoiding damage. Note that this is really the only way to track fight progress. Apart from a new frenzied swim pattern, the fight largely does not change. Keep up the attack until the impostor is defeated.

Only echoes will win this boss fight for Zelda. Using Tanglers is best. Tanglers will seek out a target, where Bombfish are stationary once deployed. Using Bombfish is riskier since planting them means putting Zelda in Jabu-Jabu’s path for longer. Biri echoes can also be effective in this boss fight, but like Bombfish, they are not as reliable at hitting their target as Tanglers, since the electric effect takes a while to develop. Once the player learns the pattern of Jabu-Jabu’s attacks, leading Tanglers to positions where they will damage the boss from range becomes substantially easier.

After the fight, the impostor Lord Jabu-Jabu will vanish, leaving behind the friends it devoured. Inawa and Rogma are freed. A rift appears in the arena, left behind by the defeated impostor. Dradd asks if the real Lord Jabu-Jabu can be rescued. Enter the rift to save Lord Jabu-Jabu. Then, continue exploring the Jabul Waters and complete side quests on the journey to defeat more impostors and rescue Link in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
