Warning: Spoilers for The Flash #14The Flash family has continuously expanded over the years, with new speedsters joining their ranks, but its latest addition has proven to be the most mysterious. Wally West’s family has a new friend joining them on their next adventure, and it’s a familiar face – or is it? I have a theory about who the newest member of the Flash’s family is, and it involves one of the DC Universe’s most powerful gods.

In The Flash #14 by Simon Spurrier, Vasco Georgiev, Matt Herms, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Wally and his family are embarking on a much-needed vacation after their battle with the Arc Angles nearly tore them apart for good. Joining them on their camping trip is their dog, Foxy, who fits right in with them. The only problem with this is that The Flash’s family has never had a dog before, yet they now act as if Foxy has always been around.

Wally makes a comment about how Foxy has been a part of their life for so long, then pauses and asks, “When did we get a dog?” Clearly, there’s more to the Flash family’s new pet than meets the eye. In fact, I have a feeling that the Flash’s dog is no ordinary animal, but secretly a god.

The Deep Change’s Newborn Has Potentially Joined the Flash Family

Foxy makes his bewildering debut in The Flash #13, when the Flash encounters a cosmic being known as the Deep Change alongside his wife and kids. After fluctuations in the Speed Force have been causing speedsters’ powers to glitch, Linda reflects on the symptoms and realizes they resemble her experiences with childbirth. As Wally succinctly puts it, “God’s having a baby.” The Flash family helps the Deep Change give birth, and in this sequence, ominous glimpses into the future pop up. Foxy appears for the first time among the Flash’s visions, and his eyes shine with an eerie glow that suggests latent power.

Because this occurs directly after the Deep Change’s childbirth, my theory is that Foxy was the product of the birth. I believe the Deep Change has retconned its “newborn” into the Flash family. The Deep Change is the living source of time itself, which explains how it can rewrite history in such a way. The question then becomes why a god would insert a pet into the Flash’s life, and the answer ties into the Deep Change’s relationship with the Flash.

The Speed Force has been a core part of the Flash’s mythos for decades as the source of his superpowers. In short, the Speed Force fuels speedsters’ powers and connects them to each other, though its true nature has remained a mystery. Now, The Flash #13 has finally provided answers about this power source with the revelation that the Speed Force is alive. Furthermore, it’s no mere force at all, but rather an emanation from the dreams of a cosmic being: the Deep Change. The Flash finds it on the verge of death, and he and his loved ones are the key to its survival.

During his encounter with the Deep Change, the Flash learns that the Speed Force doesn’t just give him and his fellow speedsters their power. The Flash family nourishes the Deep Change in return with the lives they lead, and more specifically, their love.Wally’s love for his wife, Linda, and their kids sustains the divine entity as it nurtures them with the gift of time, which they channel into speed. Through altering their timeline with the creation of Foxy, the Deep Change may be allowing itself – or an extension of its being – to experience their love in a deeper way as a beloved member of the Flash family.

While the Deep Change may be well-intentioned with its gift, I know better than to trust a mysterious new figure in the Flash’s life after the cosmic horrors he’s already come across. For instance, Wally West meets aliens called the Stillness in The Flash #2. These turn out to be explorers from the dawn of time who have grown bored with wandering and now seek death, which only the villainous Arc Angles can bring them. As such, in pursuit of this reward, they help the Arc Angles manipulate the Flash into nearly killing time. With this in mind, it’s reasonable to be wary of another reality-defying entity who’s joined the Flash.

The Flash has had so many loved ones die or be erased from the timeline, and Wally West isn’t letting it happen to his family ever again.

Cosmic oddities aside, it’s not unusual for DC to suddenly introduce an animal companion to its heroes. In Nightwing #78 by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott, Dick Grayson adopts a dog he names Haley – also known as Bitewing – who’s since become a fan-favorite mascot. There’s a chance that Foxy will fill a similar role within Flash lore, or even become a Super-Pet if he has powers. However, considering how dark the Flash’s recent adventures have been, I’m not letting my guard down about Foxy yet. All will eventually be revealed when the identity of the Flash‘s new pet comes to light.
