The Coat All the French It Girls Are Wearing This Fall

You probably have a trench coat in your wardrobe. But do you own a suede trench coat?

If not, it might be time to start shopping. The style is set to be a key trend this fall and winter. In fact, we’re already seeing it out and about on the backs of the most stylish women in France. The fashion set in Copenhagen, Milan, and New York have added the look to their rotation too.

At least, this is one winter trend you don’t have to worry about being short-lived. After all, what’s more iconic or timeless than the trench coat? The style has been a classic in men and women’s wardrobes for decades. Though originally imagined as a waterproof raincoat, the trench has been reimagined in various fabrics through the years—including, of course, suede.

Today’s versions seem to draw inspiration from the 1970s, which is in line with the recent resurgence of the boho-chic trend that’s currently taking the fashion world by storm. It’s a comeback we owe in part to Chemena Kamali, who channeled the decade during her first collection for Chloé.

If you’re buying a suede trench coat for 2024, opt for shades of brown, beige, and camel. The colors are dominating almost all our fall essentials, with our outerwear being no exception.

As for how to style the suede trench coat? For that we look to the fashionable girls of Paris and beyond. On social media, and Instagram in particular, it’s not uncommon to come across women in the know wearing long suede coats with a matching belt, worn simply with a dress or jeans. Influencer Wendy Swan, for example, paired hers with simple ballet flats and a little black dress.
