Superman’s Extreme 90s Redesign Officially Returns, With SO MANY Pouches

There have been tons of iconic looks for Superman over the years, and some of his most famous came from the 1990s. While most fans are familiar with his iconic mullet and the black suit, not many are aware of the unbelievable ’90s Hunter/Prey outfit that Superman wore, which had an amazing amount of pouches – but it was also by far one of Superman’s most powerful suits.

DC recently revealed Doomsday’s final form as the Time Trapper. While explaining this bizarre twist to Superman in a preview for Superman #20 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez, and Ariana Maher, Doomsday shows all the major battles he has had and will have throughout his life. Some of these battles are against Darkseid or the Legion of Superheroes, but most are against Superman, and one major Superman costume stands out during this recap.

Doomsday points out the fight that took place in Superman / Doomsday: Hunter / Prey by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Gregory Wright, and Bill Oakley. During this iconic battle, Superman wore a suit that was specifically designed to take down Doomsday, and it makes a major reappearance with Mora’s fantastic art.

One Of Superman’s Strongest Costumes of All Time Officially Returns to DC Lore

While this costume isn’t known by many, it’s one of Superman’s strongest, and it’s great to see it again in Mora’s style. The first time that Superman fought Doomsday, the Man of Steel was infamously killed by Doomsday (though Doomsday didn’t survive the fight either). Doomsday is an ever-looming threat to Superman, since Doomsday is the only villain to physically beat Superman to death. When the two had their major rematch in Hunter / Prey, Superman wanted to make sure he had every possible advantage, which is why he used a Mother Box to create the perfect outfit specifically designed for slaying the unkillable creature.

Big changes are coming to Metropolis now that one of Superman’s oldest and most trusted allies has gotten the opportunity of a lifetime.

Superman’s ’90s outfit didn’t just have a ludicrous number of pouches; it also enhanced his strength and durability in various ways. He had special headgear to protect him from Doomsday’s blows and a Mother Box that could instantly teleport Superman anywhere. The suit, in general, enhanced Superman’s remarkable strength, and the ridiculous ’90s pouches actually contained various weapons and tools that not even Superman was aware of, but they were all designed to stop Doomsday. With all this in mind, it’s no wonder that Doomsday himself considers this one of his greatest fights with Superman.

Even Doomsday Knows the Hunter/Prey Suit Was One of Superman’s Best Costumes

DC’s ’90s Love Continues into the 2020s

DC is well aware of how good the old Hunter / Prey Superman costume looks, as the publisher has teased its return a few times. The villainous Doomsday was specifically created to kill Superman, and this costume allowed Superman to hold his own and even defeat the monster. Superman isn’t really known for drawing power from his costume, but there’s simply no denying that when it comes to outfits, the Hunter / Prey design is one of the best that Superman has ever had.

Superman #20 is available November 27th, 2024 from DC Comics!
