Sophie Turner Elevates Basic Sweatpants and Taylor Swift Merch With the Sandwich Technique
Even Sophie Turner’s most casual looks feel effortlessly cool thanks to one simple trick.
On October 25, Turner stepped out in perhaps the most basic wardrobe staple there is: a pair of heather grey sweatpants with no added frills or intrigue. Instead, the 28-year-old actor added a touch of personality with the blue-gray Eras Tour crewneck Swifties have been coveting for over a year.
Turner, of course, became close friends with Taylor Swift following her split from Joe Jonas in September 2023. At the time, Swift lent Turner her NYC apartment while the exes worked through their divorce. “Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year,” Turner told British Vogue in May. “I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me and provided us with a home and a safe space. She really has a heart of gold.”
However, the sartorial shoutout to the pop star was not what elevated this look—at least, not by itself. What brought this airport-worthy casual ‘fit to the next level was her use of the sandwich technique, which involves matching your top—or top layering piece—with your shoes. This method not only balancing the look, but gives the impression that you’ve put in effort without having to do much at all. In Turner’s case that means finishing off her off-duty look with a pair of blue suede Adidas Gazelles. You can see the look here.
Sophie Turner often utilizes the sandwich technique when prioritizing comfort. The actor once paired a blue Playboy crewneck with a brown suede jacket at the airport, creating cohesion with a pair of Ugg Tasman slippers. In May 2023, she was seen sandwiching twice in one week, pairing the same white and green Løci sneakers with a green Bode jacket and forrest green cardigan.
However, she’s also been known to match more elegant outerwear with her footwear on occasion—including for a girl’s night out with Taylor Swift. Clearly, she’s found herself a winning formula that could help us all get out the door a bit faster in the morning.
